The Power to Surprise exhibition showcases designs from 2025, a year that De La Espada co-founder Luis De Oliveira refers to as “a beautiful creative spell; like a vintage moment.” It includes conceptual seating by Sam Baron and De La Espada Atelier; the statement Tai Collection by Luca Nichetto with its expansive mirrors and gloss lacquer cabinetry; and seating upholstered in traditional Portuguese blankets handwoven at the Fabricaal workshop in Alentejo.

“Looking back we thought: These pieces cannot be seen just in isolation; they also need to be seen in a context together with other pieces.

So we show them integrated with what I consider classics of De La Espada. We have the Twenty-Five Sofa by De La Espada Atelier. We have, by Jason Miller, Elliot Table and the Elliot Chair. We have the Belle Reeve Sofa designed by Luca Nichetto that goes back to 2018, another vintage De La Espada year,” says Luis.

He continues:

“The Power to Surprise exhibition shows De La Espada classics with our obsessions meeting together. This is a very deliberate effort to show you our power to surprise.”

De La Espada celebrates creativity across disciplines. The Power to Surprise exhibition also shines a light on the work of local artists:

“We're very happy to showcase the work of a wood turner, a Spanish artist called Aitor Martínez who makes astonishing vessels; ceramics by Porto-based French artist Victor Marqué, who we first exhibited with at Lisbon Design Week in 2024; and of course, wall-hanging textile art that has become a fixture in our gallery, created by our collaborator, London-based Catarina Riccabona,” shares Luis.

Power to Surprise is open weekdays by appointment until June 30.
